The Aruba Instant Access Point runs a virtual controller in ArubaOS that allows us to play in controller-less competitive scenarios. You do not use a physical controller appliance when running APs in Instant mode. Instant offers a fully distributed WLAN architecture platform where one dynamically-elected AP (Virtual Controller) automatically distributes the network configuration to other Instant APs in the same L2 domain (IAP cluster). One can think of "Instant" as being an operational mode of Aruba Access Points, just as Campus or controller-based is a mode of operation.
